Mission Reach Riverwalk Trail
This hike and bike trail along the San Antonio river connects all the historical missions here in San Antonio: Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion, and of course the Alamo! Along this trail, you’ll not only be able to see the missions, but you’ll get beautiful views of the river, historical neighborhoods, and the many flora and fauna native to the area.
Government Canyon State Natural Area
Many people have no idea about this 12,000-acre hidden gem tucked in the north side of San Antonio off Galm Road. With a variety of trails, there is sure to be something for the whole family to enjoy. Bring your bikes for some biking trails, or hike all together to find and explore the 110-million-year-old dinosaur tracks on the Joe Johnston route. This natural area also has geocaches, guided hikes, and even a natural playscape.
Located off I-10 on the northwest side of SA, Friedrich Wilderness Park is a local favorite for feeling like you're escaping the city—while still staying close by. This is due to the canyons along the trail as well as its beautiful views of the hill country. This park offers 10-miles of hiking trails with varying difficulties that allow everyone to find something to enjoy. Friedrich Wilderness Park is internationally known for birdwatching and is even home to a few endangered species of birds so keep an eye out for those as well.
Known as “The Cleanest Little Park in Texas”, this 202-acre park has tons of different trails to hike, bike, and explore with the whole family! The trails are also well shaded by the many mature oak trees, and you may even see some deer along the way! After your hike, kids can also play on one of the playgrounds, or maybe even bring a basketball to shoot some hoops at one of their basketball courts.
At the Cibolo Nature Center, there are plenty of things for kids to explore and learn. Wade through the creek or take a hike through the 6+ miles of trails that span through four distinct ecosystems. This park also features dinosaur tracks and a boardwalk to explore the wildlife along their marshland trail.
A Texan favorite for its beautiful views of the hill country, Enchanted Rock is a popular trail for people of all ages. Explore the 11-miles of trails full of scenery and amazing rock formations, but also be sure you make time to climb to the top of the massive pink granite dome.
Another stunning park, with a variety of views and trails, Eisenhower park is an Alamo City favorite located close to the Rim shopping center. Try out the fully paved trails if you're looking for something simple, or venture out on the natural surface trails for a slight challenge. While you’re here, be sure to take the kids out to the observation tower to climb up and see some of the best views of the city.
Named for the Apache and Comanche Tribes who once used this hill as a vantage point, this park has been designated as a National Historic Trail today. This park is the fourth highest point of elevation in the city and features expansive views of the city, a playground, picnic areas, and plenty of hiking trails. Hike up to the lookout tower for the best views, or simply explore the trails and nature in this 96-acre park.
Known for its many activities, McAllister Park is comprised of 976 acres of land on the northeast side of San Antonio. With 5 miles of asphalt trails and 10 miles of unpaved natural trails to hike and bike— there is plenty of areas to explore! When you’re not on the trail, this park is also home to little league baseball fields, soccer fields, picnic spots, and even a dog park.
