Where to Camp and Park an RV in San Antonio

Looking for an escape for the whole family to enjoy the great outdoors? As Fall rolls around and the temperatures start to get cooler, what better way to relax and disconnect than sleeping under the stars! Here are some of the best spots to get outside and camp in and around San Antonio.
Government Canyon State Natural Area
This 12,000-acre natural area sits on San Antonio’s far Northwest side and offers 23 campsites for up to 8 people and 2 group campsites which allow for up to 16 people. Each campsite includes a tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, and even a composting toilet! The campsites are all walk-in and are located between 20-60 yards from the designated parking area. When you’re not camping, this natural area also has over 40 miles of trails to explore and take in some great views of the Hill Country.
Located about an hour from San Antonio, Blanco State Park sits right on a one-mile stretch of the river. With 17 full-hookup campsites, 12 campsites with electricity, and 7 reservable screened shelters this park has plenty of space with great views. Each campsite has a picnic table, lantern post, and easy access to nearby restrooms. During the day, take a dip in the water or bring your fishing gear as the river is stocked with plenty of fish. Kayaks and fishing supplies are also available to rent when available. If you’re new to camping this spot is perfect for everyone to enjoy.
Alamo River RV Ranch and Campground
Conveniently located off IH-35S and just minutes from downtown, this spot is a great place to get away and relax while still staying close to home. With a variety of RV hookup spots, tent campsites, and cabins, there is something for everyone at this campground. Park amenities include fishing on the Medina River, hiking/biking trails, laundry facilities, grills, fire pits, picnic tables, and a business center if you still need to get some work done while on vacation. Bring your pets, including your horses—because they have a horse corral and miles of secluded trails to explore on horseback too. This campground also offers special discounts for current and former military servicemembers due to its close location to Lackland AFB as well!
Hill Country State Natural Area
Located Northwest of San Antonio in Bandera, TX, Hill Country State Natural Area has over 5,000 acres of canyons, scenic plateaus, and tranquil creek bottoms to explore at this former ranch. This natural area offers 22 walk- or hike-in campsites for groups to enjoy, as well as 6 equestrian campsites, a large group campsite, or a lodge as options if you’re planning to bring your horses. During the day, explore the vast grounds on one of their hiking, biking, or equestrian trails to take in all that this stunning natural area has to offer.
With 3 miles of the Frio River flowing through almost 1,800 acres of stunning Hill Country Terrain, Garner State Park in Concan has plenty to do. Hike the many miles of trails with views of the river and caves to explore, then take a dip in the river to float and relax. They also have, mini-golf, paddle boats, fishing, biking, and geocaching so your friends and family will never run out of fun! Garner State Park has plenty of room for people to stay with a variety of screened shelters, cabins, and campsites for small or large groups to enjoy! Be sure to reserve a spot ahead of time as this popular park fills up quickly!
Lost Maples State Natural Area
Although it’s a little bit further of a drive from San Antonio, Lost Maples offers some of the best scenery when Fall hits and the maple leaves start to change colors. This natural area also has some of the best trails to explore during the day with one trail overlooking the hill country from a 2,200-foot cliff, but be sure to make it back to camp at night because this area has one of the darkest skies in the state (which means it’s great for stargazing!). With 30 campsites with hookups for water and electricity bring your RV, or if you’re looking for something more primitive they also offer 50 campsites to backpack and hike into.
This 517-acre recreational and camping park on the Guadalupe River comes full of easy access to the water for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. They also have a variety of hiking and biking trails with beautiful views of the river and Hill Country to enjoy as well. Camping here comes with a variety of amenities including a picnic table, campfire pit with a grill, clean restroom and shower facilities, and plenty of fun for kids with a playground, sand volleyball, and a basketball court. Kerrville-Schreiner Park comes with a variety of camping options from full hookups for RVs to cabins and tent sites.
