The city of San Antonio is constantly growing. Many decide to move to San Antonio to retire, for a new job, a life change, or to serve at one of the military bases in town.

While there are many towns in the United States that people could relocate to, the Alamo City is a special place worth considering. Here’s why: 

It’s a Great Cost of Living
San Antonio has a lot to offer in comparison to other Texas cities. Cities in the United States are ranked on a scale of 1-100 that represents where they fall in comparison to other cities as well as the national average in terms of living costs. The overall cost of living for San Antonio ranks 89/100. The state of Texas as a whole ranks 93/100. Overall, the cost of living in San Antonio allows residents to get more bang for their buck with some to spare. 

The Weather Is Warm
Average annual highs and lows in San Antonio maintain a steady stance in the 80s and 60s, respectfully. That temperature range is most prevalent in the spring months, arguably the best time to visit San Antonio and to start shopping around for a home; or just to visit and get familiarized with the different areas in town. Residents enjoy a low occurrence of precipitation, with an average of only 5-6 rainy days per month.  

An Abundance of Outdoor Activities
San Antonio is a great place to enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer. The city’s parks cover more than 300,000 acres of land where residents can get outside for physical activities or just hang out with friends, family, and of course, their dogs.

  • The Riverwalk, where you can stroll down a portion (or majority if you’re brave) of the 15-mile-long path, 5 miles of which runs through the downtown area 
  • Greenways, which are perfect for biking, walking. and jogging the trailheads of which are often tucked in residential areas and neighborhoods
  • San Antonio Botanical Garden, which covers 41 beautiful acres of greenery, including a rose garden and conservatory
  • Fishing at Calaveras LakeBraunig Lake, or one of the other bodies of water in town, all stocked with fish for catch and release angling
  • San Antonio Zoo, located in Brackenridge Park and home to over 750 different species and one of the world’s largest bird collections
  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld, both featuring seasonal attractions nearly year-round

Great Food & Drink
If you’re often in the mood for good food, you’ll feel right at home in San Antonio. All palettes and cravings are welcome—including burgers, Italian food, Mexican food, BBQ, vegan/plant-based, and of course, tacos.

On the south side of town, you’ll find El Remedio, a food truck that dishes up birria tacos, ceviches, and aguachiles – plus, it’s BYOB.


Places to socialize and have an adult beverage are also popular, with a number of options available across the different areas of town. Each establishment offers its own unique environment with a full range of price points to please.

Pro-tip: seek out bars that offer iconic San Antonio experiences, like the Esquire Tavern, which has been in business since 1933 and features the longest wooden bar top in Texas, spanning 100 ft. in length.  

Overall, San Antonio offers a large variety of options in terms of neighborhoods, cultural attractions, restaurants and bars, ranges of walkability, and that classic “small town, big city” feel that has remained constant over the years.
