Realty San Antonio Helps Fight Weekend Hunger for Children of Bexar County

On Friday, February 25, Realty San Antonio Agents and Staff gathered at Platinum Top 50 San Antonio Day of Service event to volunteer for Snack Pak 4 Kids. The goal of Snack Pak 4 Kids is to end weekend hunger for children in Bexar County by providing a backpack filled with kid-friendly snacks each Friday of the school year.

The Realty San Antonio team spent the day at Snack Pak 4 Kids Warehouse processing inventory, assembling snack packs, and setting up packaging alongside other San Antonio-area Realtors.

“San Antonio is our home, and it’s the place we encourage our clients to call home; so it is our duty to serve our community from our hearts and to always give this community our very best,” says Mariah McClure, Realty San Antonio Agent and Platinum Top 50 - 2022 Newcomer Of The Year. “When I was a teacher and social worker in San Antonio, I saw firsthand how scarce access to nutritious food was for children in our community. Too often, we forget that our basic needs in life are sometimes considered privileges for others, and it's important to do what we can to provide for others in need.”

In Bexar County alone, over 120,000 children are considered to be food insecure.  Of those, it is estimated that 10-20% actually deal with chronic hunger — meaning that they lack adequate nutrition to lead a healthy, productive life.  And although Federal Nutrition programs provide meals for students during the school week, weekends can be especially challenging for these children.

This September, Snack Pak 4 Kids will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary since they began serving children at Lamar Elementary.  The program has doubled each year, with many local churches, civic organizations, businesses, and private schools partnering to serve over 30 public schools in four school districts.

“As a former school psychologist, I've seen first-hand the impact that being able to access basic necessities has on children and families," said Marisa Jackson, Realty San Antonio’s Agent Success Manager. "For many children, the food they receive at school is their only meal. With Snack Pak 4 Kids, families don't have to worry about what their children are going to eat on the weekends so they can focus on school during the week.” 

“I encourage people to find something they are passionate about and see how they can get involved. There are so many great nonprofits in San Antonio and they always need volunteers. When you volunteer and learn about the people you impact, it fills your soul like nothing else.”
