Pearl Brewery

The Pearl is a brewery that dates back to 1883, but it’s also the name given to the historic space and community surrounding it. The complex is an event space, home to a bustling farmer’s market, and much more. There is also plenty of free fun to be had here. The expansive grounds around the brewery host a variety of events throughout the year, including free live music. It’s also a great place to bike around if it isn’t a particularly crowded day, and you can stroll up to the river and head to the River Walk from here.

Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair

Located at the iconic Hemisfair Park (home to The Tower of the Americas and Institute of Texan Cultures), this colorful playground is eye-catching enough to be a work of art. Don’t let the word playground throw you, though—this space is designed for everyone. The adaptive playground makes it easy for wheelchair users to enjoy the playground, and kids can have fun in the sand play area and at the splash pad. For the adults, there is ping pong and cornhole available to play.

King William Historic District

The King William Historic District stands as a testament to the city's cultural heritage. This neighborhood, adorned with elegant architecture and serene tree-lined avenues, transports visitors back in time with its meticulously preserved homes, museums, and delightful local stores. Its designation in the National Register of Historic Places and the King William Local Historic District honors its significance, inviting exploration of its storied past and offering a captivating journey through San Antonio's history.

San Antonio Art League and Museum

Built in 1896, this intimate house-turned-museum and gallery now houses over 600 works in its permanent collection, which focuses on Texas artists.  Works in all media - including paintings, drawings, prints and photographs, ceramics, and sculptures - are available for public viewing.  Revolving contemporary exhibits highlight both local and regional artists and represent the unique work of diverse Texas talent.

World’s Largest Cowboy Boots

Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, a pioneering Texan artist celebrated for his cowboy funk artistry, gained fame in 1979 for crafting the "World's Largest Cowboy Boots" as a commission for Washington, DC. These colossal 35-foot-tall and 33-foot-long fake ostrich-and-calf-skin boots were assembled from scavenged materials in just six weeks for a payment of $7,000. While humorously suggesting they could hold 300,000 gallons of beer and claim the title of the world's largest, their precise ranking was uncertain then due to limited resources on such colossal roadside artworks. After their stint in DC, the boots found a new home at the North Star Mall in San Antonio, Texas, facing transportation challenges en route. Despite a few adventures, including one boot wedging beneath an overpass and an amusing incident of a homeless man using a boot as shelter and cooking space, these iconic boots have stood the test of time, undergoing a revitalization in 2012 that cost $80,000 for the refurbishment of their tops.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Within the park grounds, four separate mission sites embody nearly 300 years of rich history and culture and offer recreation opportunities for the whole family. Step back in time while never leaving the city at Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada, the park’s active catholic parishes. The churches hold regular services in these historic buildings and are open to park visitors during park hours, except during special services, such as weddings and funerals.

San Pedro Springs Park

San Pedro Springs Park stands as a cherished sanctuary, steeped in rich history dating back to the Spanish colonial era. This verdant haven, the second-oldest municipal park in the U.S., echoes tales of indigenous gatherings, Spanish explorers, and significant events spanning centuries. Offering tranquil walking paths, a serene spring-fed pool, and inviting shaded picnic spots, the park invites visitors to unwind amidst lush greenery and captivating historical remnants. As a recognized Lone Star Legacy Park, San Pedro Springs Park stands as a testament to the city's commitment to preserving cultural heritage and offering a rejuvenating retreat for all who venture within its boundaries.

The Toilet Seat Museum

The Barney Smith Toilet Seat Art Museum, uniquely situated within Truck Yard The Colony, is a testament to the life's work of Barney Smith, an artist who intricately crafted over 1400 art pieces out of toilet seats across several decades. Originally housed in his backyard garage since 1992, the museum garnered adoration from San Antonio locals and visitors alike, receiving widespread national and international acclaim for its whimsical and charming art. With Barney's retirement, his collection found a new and fitting home at Truck Yard, preserving his legacy for future generations. Just before his 98th birthday and the museum's opening, Barney expressed his appreciation for the display of his life's work, hoping to be remembered for the value of preserving items otherwise destined for destruction.

Denman Estate Park

Often bypassed by tourists, Denman Estate Park stands as a serene sanctuary adorned with meticulously landscaped gardens, picturesque trails, and tranquil picnic spots. This hidden gem serves as an oasis of calm, a haven away from the city's clamor, catering to nature enthusiasts seeking solace amidst serene surroundings. Offering an ideal setting for quality outdoor moments with family and friends, visitors can relish the fresh air and sunlight while strolling the trails and admiring the stunning Korean monument, a masterpiece crafted by artisans from Gwangju, Korea, paying homage to the city's sisterhood. While alcohol is prohibited, the park's 12.52 acres, purchased by the City of San Antonio from Gilbert Denman Jr.'s estate in 2007, provide ample amenities including a .5-mile walking trail, a labyrinth, picnic spots, parking, fencing, lighting, and the remarkable Korean monument, offering a serene escape and an enriching cultural experience for all who visit Denman Estate Park.

Hemisfair

Built for the 1968 World’s Fair to celebrate “the confluence of civilizations in the Americas” and San Antonio’s 250th anniversary, this park includes great amenities like the water gardens, wood and sand playgrounds, and great eateries. Still thriving today, it houses many buildings and structures dating from the Spanish Colonial Era through the mid-twentieth century. Twenty-two original buildings, along with structures specifically made for the World’s Fair, like the Tower of the Americas, are just one aspect of the park’s many highlights. Note: the parking near the park is not free.

San Fernando Cathedral

This stunning Catholic church in the heart of San Antonio should be on your list of the best free things to do in San Antonio. Thought to have been built between 1738 and 1750, it is one of, if not the oldest, cathedrals in Texas. The church is very much a thriving part of San Antonio’s Catholic community, and it is the site of many local events, weddings, and more. A popular reason to visit the cathedral is to see “The Saga,” a light show that has been projected onto the outside of the church every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening since 2014. There are three times to catch the display: 9:00 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and 10:00 p.m., and it runs for 24 minutes. This 7,000-square-foot video art show will run through 2024.

McNay Art Museum

The first modern art museum in Texas, the McNay is named after founder Marion Koogler McNay. Their mission is to be reflective of the culture of San Antonio by showcasing art that reflects the public. Opened in 1954, this museum houses 22,000 works of art, including the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and more. Even walking around the building and admiring the courtyard is worthwhile. Luckily, there are a variety of ways to experience the museum for free. There is free general admission every Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the first Sunday of each month from noon to 5:00 p.m. If you are a student or faculty member at a number of the local colleges, you can get in for free by showing your ID.

The San Antonio Fire Museum

A quick 3-minute walk from the Alamo, this museum can occasionally be overlooked, but it shouldn’t be! Located at San Antonio’s original Central Fire Headquarters, this museum was the dream of 5 San Antonio firefighters. When you visit, you’ll get to see antique fire trucks, equipment used to fight fires, old photographs, and documents that have been carefully preserved. Kids have a blast here because there is a 1953 fire truck that they can climb up onto while wearing replica gear. This museum is staffed by volunteers who are retired firefighters, so they have plenty of stories to tell. Stop by for free admission on the first Tuesday of every month.

Historic Market Square

This bustling outdoor plaza stretches three blocks and is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, and it is the largest Mexican market in the United States. The space is home to more than 100 shops, and it’s a hub for Mexican culture in San Antonio. Walking through the market is free, and events happen here frequently that also don’t cost anything. Originally started at this location in the 1890s, the market was revitalized in 1976. Walk around this vibrant destination and transport yourself to a market in Mexico for a few hours.
